Skills UP Programme

Dacsa Group has collaborated with the Polytechnic University of Valencia in the SKills UP programme which aims to connect university studies with the changing job demands of the real world. In addition, it aims to improve the employability and entrepreneurial skills of students, thereby boosting the key interdisciplinary skills that graduates need.

On behalf of Dacsa, our colleague Manuel Ochoa, Group Origination and Sustainability Manager, has been the person in charge of directing the session, under the title “Trend in food production, sustainability and genetic modification”. Manuel has spoken about the history, evolution and situation of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in the world, as well as their advantages and disadvantages, legislation and market trends.

During the programme, we have been able to enjoy a debate where the students´ great persuasion, communication and leadership abilities have been seen.

At the end of the session, our colleagues África Valldecabres and Justo Aznar, from the People Department, talked about the job opportunities at Dacsa and the different training programmes, advising students to enjoy their future work roles.

 

 

Arroz Dacsa and RunCáncer

For two years, Arroz Dacsa has collaborated with RunCáncer – AECC Valencia, the largest charity race and walk circuit in Europe.

The objective of RunCáncer is to promote healthy lifestyle habits, promote female and child participation and promote cancer research, through the award of different pre-doctoral scholarships for young researchers in Valencian research centres.

The RunCáncer – AECC Valencia circuit has closed an unusual 2020, marked by the Coronavirus, with more than 135,000 euros raised that will be used entirely to fight the disease.

Among the main actions carried out during the most complicated period of the pandemic, the virtual event, held in May 2020 and called “RunCancer at home”, managed to add about 26,000 euros. This was in addition to the different virtual race challenges such as the “Dorsal 0” or the action “Valencia Against Cancer”, with 12,500 euros raised.

Other challenges were the walks, carried out before the pandemic situation, in the Valencian towns of Rafelbunyol, Eliana, Chella and Aielo de Malferit, as well as the new types “On Your Way” that were celebrated in dozens of locations during recent months. In total, 25 walks were held.

 

The events that it organizes are 100% charitable and everything that is obtained through registrations is destined entirely to oncology research projects.

From Arroz Dacsa we are clear that it is about continuing to contribute and we will do so during 2021, a new year in which RunCáncer is already preparing new sports challenges which are 100% charitable.

Thank you for continuing to help fight this disease without a vaccine.

Dacsa Group and Payasospital

Coinciding with International Childhood Cancer Day we want to highlight an association in which Dacsa Group has collaborated for three years and has done an impressive job: Payasospital.

Payasospital is an association that has, for more than 20 years, been dedicated to distributing smiles to hospitalized children in the Valencia region . Week by week they visit children admitted to Valencian hospitals, with very special doctors that wear huge red noses, colourful gowns and use puppets, although during 2020 and 2021 activities have been carried out virtually because of the pandemic.

Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of these children, their families and the staff who care for them, helping them to better cope with hospital stays, de-dramatizing the medical environment and offering moments of relaxation and distraction through humour, laughter and fantasy.

These artistic interventions are endorsed by health authorities and recommended by experts, given their beneficial effects on the health of patients and families. The organisation regularly works with eight hospitals in the Region: “Hospital General de Castellón, Hospital de La Plana de Vila-Real, Hospital Clínico, Hospital La Fe, Hospital Doctor Peset, Hospital de San Juan, Hospital General de Alicante and Hospital General de Elche” with a permanent staff of 24 professional artists and 48 volunteers.

Pésol Pea, the first wet textured protein plant in Spain

At Dacsa Group, we have achieved, through our food solutions company Molendum Ingredients, the launch of the Pésol Pea project; the first wet textured protein plant in Spain.

According to market trends, vegetable alternatives have growannually by double digits and have stopped being a fashion to become a reality. We highlight some of the data that confirmthis trend as 25% of Spaniards have tried vegetable meat alternatives in the last 12 months and 43% of Spaniards want to reduce their consumption of red meat.

Molendum Ingredients will have a new extrusion line and another new line that maintains moisture and cooling. This new project will allow us to offer “plant based” solutions, both wet and dry, adapted to the needs of our partners.

With the pea as the common thread of the project,  at Pésol Pea we want to offer a solution clean label, vegan and non- GMO. In this way, our plant in Zamora will develop vegetable alternatives to meat.

Dacsa Group and Skills UP programme

Dacsa Group is collaborating with the Polytechnic University of Valencia in the Skills UP programme, which aims to connect university studies with changing, real–world, labour demands.

 


It is intended for students and graduates, who will develop valuable extracurricular activities within the university environment. The SKills Up programme will involve the participation of 12 strategic companies working with the UPV that, through Masterclasses, will improve the employability and entrepreneurial skills of the participants, thus promoting the key interdisciplinary skills that graduates need.

Among the companies that will participate together with Dacsa Group are: Airbus, BBVA, Capgemini, EY, Ferrovial, Ford, Huawei, Power Electronics, PWC, Sothis and Torrecid. The participating companies will give training sessions on different topics. In this way, participants will gain first hand knowledge of the company and share their experience. In our case, it will be our colleague Manuel Ochoa who will give the training session in the programme: “Trends in food production, sustainability and genetic modification”.

It is an association that was created in the´80s to give a voice to companies dedicated to corn milling in Europe, of which Dacsa Group has been a member since 1986. Corn milling has specific and different needs than milling from other cereals, such as wheat; for this reason, it was necessary to create an association to defend these interests in the European Union.

Today, Euromaisiers is made up of 23 companies from more than 10 countries of the European Union. It is based in Belgium and its governing body is made up of a president and two vice-presidents who are elected every four years. The members of this association process 90% of the corn supply in Europe for the production of flour, grits and by-products.

Argentinean flint maize

Argentinean flint maize has more nutritional quality for human health than regular maize

An Argentinean research group did the first detailed characterization of traditional Argentinean maize kernel carotenoid profiles.

Flint maize (also known as Plata) is preferred by the dry-milling industry to elaborate food products, such as breakfast cereals, cookies, polenta, and beer. This hard endosperm maize type is produced as a specialty in Argentina, where most maize is yellow soft endosperm dented kernel type. Flint maize preference is related to its hardness, which results in high dry-milling yields, and the natural color that provides to food products. In order to guarantee the physical kernel characteristics of this specialty, SENASA created the Flint Standard, which regulates minimum hardness values.

Carotenoids play a major role in maize kernel color. These compounds have antioxidant properties, and are located mainly within the kernel endosperm. In humans, some carotenoids are precursors of retinol or vitamin A, which is important in multiple biological processes. Because of their antioxidant activity, carotenoids are major contributors to free radicals reduction. This characteristic results in positive effects on consumers’ health as well as chemical and sensory food attributes by preventing lipid oxidation. These pigments occur naturally, and are highly valued by the food industry because they provide a natural coloring source, reducing the need of artificial food colorants.

Commercially available flint hybrids used for human consumption have total carotenoid concentrations up to 45% greater than regular dent maize. Moreover, they have a higher concentration and proportion of β-branch carotenoids (zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, and β-carotene) compared to dented genotypes. These carotenoid types have higher nutritional value than those from the α-branch (lutein, α-cryptoxanthin, and α-carotene) because two of them are vitamin A precursors.

The nutritional characteristics of flint maize grains were recently described by Ezequiel Saenz, Lucas Borrás, and José A. Gerde from the National University of Rosario and CONICET (Scientific Research Council of Argentina). Results were published in the Journal of Cereal Science. This study is the first carotenoid profile characterization in Argentinean flint maize, and its findings increases the value-added of flint maize that is currently destined for human consumption.

Worldwide, consumers demand natural, non-genetically modified foods with abundant micronutrient content. The antioxidant and vitamin properties of carotenoids naturally present in Argentinean flint maize kernels offer a great opportunity to the dry milling industry to develop more nutritious food products, which will allow them to explore new markets.

Hyperloop, the means of transport to reach the future

Hyperloop is known as the fifth means of transport. It combines the speed of an airplane, but with the frequency and comfort of the train. It would appear difficult to achieve this, however, the concept is quite simple: “these are capsules that will levitate inside a tube at low pressure. By levitating, we eliminate friction with the ground and, by extracting the air, friction with the air. Thus, there is practically nothing that slows you down ”, as the team members comment.

Hyperloop UPV is made up of a team of students from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, whose mission is to design a functional Hyperloop prototype that will allow the use of this transport in the future. This team was established in 2015, after the Hyperlook Design Weekend Competition that was organized by SpaceX. This team has worked during the different editions, standing out in a multitude of areas and putting the Hyperlook UPV team in the top 10 in all of them.

Furthermore, the Hyperloop team at the Polytechnic University of Valencia has gone one step further and developed the Hypetube. A tube measuring 12 meters long and 2 meters in diameter that has become the first vacuum chamber in Spain that works with solar energy. This tube is pioneering in Spain as it is self-sustaining, given that it works thanks to the 12 panels on the outside that provide it with energy.

In addition, they have organized the European Hyperloop Week, in which Valencia will host the first European event focused exclusively on this means of transport and in which the city will become the Hyperloop capital of the world. For a week, teams of students from more than 20 universities, on five continents, will compete in the design of prototypes. In addition, there will be talks and round tables. These meetings are held with the aim of generating an exchange of ideas and views between members of the student community and companies.

Arroz Dacsa is committed to talent, which is why we have sponsored this programme for three years. This is because they promote values such as effort, perseverance, research, innovation and development. Values that are also represented in our company. The Polytechnic University of Valencia initiative is to enable its students to have extracurricular activities. In fact, this was one of the first projects the programme had and, over time, it has become one of the best international ambassadors for the university.

Hyperloop is an idea that was raised in the past, but over time it has been rediscovered in the present so that it can be improved in the future. This concept originated in the 19th century, but it has not been until now that we have had enough technology to carry it out.  In addition, it is necessary that the centres of big cities are able to connect using a completely clean technology, avoiding waiting.

However, Hyperloop is much more. It is the union of people, businesses and cultures. It represents the union of the whole world. In addition, sharing the values of Arroz Dacsa, it is to fly the flag for innovation, for a more sustainable future. A set of advantages provided by the different technologies in a sector that has been revolutionized, since it was stagnating in the development of new technologies. Hyperloop is not just the future. Hyperloop is the means of transport to reach the future.

PROJECT: “LIGHTENING THE ENGAGEMENT”

Start the engagement. Do you want to know what your manager values most about you?

Dacsa Group’s  HR department, has started the project “LIGHTENING THE ENGAGEMENT”, igniting commitment. An agile system to make our professionals grow through the positive reinforcement of their supervisors or direct managers.

As you know “feedback” is feedback. All of us need to know the opinion of our managers about our work. This  is something of importance at Dacsa, but it does not always materialize as we would like.

For this reason, this time, we have approached all colleagues who do not participate in a formal performance evaluation, so that they have the opportunity to request, if they wish, an assessment of their work and the way they do it: it is a form of recognition that motivates people. Voluntary and proactive.

 

How does the agile feedback system work at Dacsa?

 

  • A form is sent from the HR Department at least twice a year (April and September), where anyone can decide if they want to receive information about their work
  • Managers will receive an email with their collaborator’s requests and, if they wish, they receive our expert support, to formulate the most accurate message.

 

What are the options to choose from regarding the questions that have been offered? 

 

  • What’s the best thing you’ve done in the last three months
  • What is the most positive aspect of who you are or your way of working
  • What does your boss think can help you improve?

 

In addition, collaborators can also choose how to receive it: in writing or in a personal meeting.

In short, managing the relationship with teams properly and keeping people engaged and satisfied is increasingly important for Dacsa´s success.

Gestionar de manera global la Ingeniería de Construcción de los proyectos de DACSA GROUP, coordinándose con el Proyect Manager del proyecto. Proporcionar una gestión general de la coordinación entre el Project Manager, los Contratistas y la Ingeniería.

Diseñar y/o colaborar en el diseño de la Obra Civil e Instalaciones de los proyectos. Liderar el equipo de trabajo formado por personal propio de DACSA y personal externo para el diseño del proyecto de construcción.

  • Soporte Técnico del Departamento de Compras

Elaborar para los tender, las especificaciones técnicas que definan completamente los requisitos de diseño y calidad de los materiales, equipos y servicios. Auditar a los proveedores para comprobar que las habilidades, competencias y equipamiento son las adecuadas.

  • Dirección de la Ingeniería de Construcción

Dirigir Técnicamente la Obra Civil e Instalaciones del Proyecto. Coordinación en Obra de Proveedores, Coordinador Seguridad, y Direcciones Facultativas de OC e Instalaciones. Elaboración del Acta de Seguimiento de Obra.

  • Elaboración Informe Construcción y Control del Presupuesto

Elaborar el Informe Mensual de seguimiento de la construcción. Control del presupuesto de construcción. Proponer soluciones para cumplir el presupuesto aprobado en caso de desviaciones.
